Oral Hygiene

Good oral health starts with good oral hygiene. At Optim Smile we will show you how to best protect one of your most valuable assets – your teeth. While brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing your teeth are standard things you should do, many people have never been shown how to do either properly. Your dentist will demonstrate the best angle to use when brushing your teeth, to make sure you are caring for your teeth as well as your gums. We’ll also show you how to floss to make sure you are removing food and plaque from between your teeth. Practising these good habits every day will go a long way towards preventing future dental problems and keeping your teeth in good shape. A twice yearly visit to your dentist will means it’s more likely that any problems will be detected when they are relatively minor – making the remedy simpler and easier on you. Your teeth will also be professionally cleaned at your twice yearly visit. This will enable any plaque or tartar deposits to be removed. Having any tartar (calculus) build ups

your first appointment is very important.

At Optim Smile, we take the time to understand your needs and address any concerns about your treatment. During your initial visit, we will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, jaw, and oral tissues, and may take x-rays, photographs, or a model of your mouth.

You will receive clear quotations for any necessary diagnostic tests, which will guide us in making informed treatment decisions with you. If further treatment is required, we’ll explain all options in detail.

The final treatment plan is developed with your input, ensuring you’re informed and comfortable with the process. You’ll also complete a confidential health questionnaire to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.

Even babies with only a few teeth need to brush

No matter that there are only a few teeth present, bacteria will find its way into your baby’s mouth and can cause decay.

Before your baby’s teeth emerge, wipe their gums with a soft cloth twice a day to remove bacteria and get them used to cleaning.

Once the first tooth appears, start brushing. Place your baby in a secure position and gently support their head while brushing each tooth and massaging the gums with a soft children’s toothbrush and water. No toothpaste is needed until 18 months.

You can also start flossing your baby’s teeth. Gently floss along each tooth up to the gum, supporting their head for control. If you’re unsure, ask your dentist for guidance.
