Children's Dentistry

We understand the importance of patient education at our dental clinic so that you can make informed decisions about your oral health. When you bring your children in to see us at a young age, we can ensure that you know how to keep their teeth clean and healthy with children’s dentistry service.

Early dental visits mean we can address issues that might pop up, including tooth decay, thumb-sucking, and teeth grinding. In addition, it’s best if we can break bad habits early before they have an impact on permanent teeth.

Children’s First Visit to the Dentist

From the moment your child walks through our door, we want him or her to be relaxed and calm. Our office environment was created to make everyone comfortable—regardless of age.

We know the sights and sounds of the dentist’s office can be scary for youngsters. The first visit to our surgery is primarily to help kids see that there is nothing to fear here. Building trust with the dentist from an early age will not only help alleviate any anxiety your child might have, but it will also encourage a healthy relationship with the dentist as they grow up.

When kids come in, we will help them learn how to take care of their teeth with our specialized care. Good brushing and flossing habits that start early will keep their smiles healthy for many years.

Preventive Care for Children Dentistry

Some kids are more prone to tooth decay than others, so we offer preventive measures such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants. These non-invasive procedures are not painful, require no shots or drilling, and protect against cavities.

A fluoride treatment will help teeth stay strong, healthy, and resistant to dental decay. Dental sealants are applied to the back molars soon after they erupt. The sealant serves as a physical barrier, keeping food particles from collecting and bacteria from taking hold in the deep grooves of those teeth.

Space Maintainers for Children Dentistry

If children lose a tooth early or have a baby (primary) tooth extracted due to dental decay, we have oral appliances known as space maintainers that are used for young children which can help guide the permanent teeth into erupting properly. This can often decrease the orthodontic treatment—or at least the length of orthodontic treatment—that might be needed later.

A space maintainer is an appliance that is custom-made by a dentist or orthodontist in acrylic or metal material. It can be either removable or cemented in a child’s mouth. Its purpose is to keep the space open to allow the permanent tooth to erupt and come into place.

Baby teeth are important to the development of the teeth, jawbones, and muscles and help to guide permanent teeth into position when the baby teeth are lost. If space is not maintained, then teeth can shift into the open space, and orthodontic treatment may be required.

Not every child who loses a baby tooth early or to dental decay requires a space maintainer; however, a professional consultation with your dentist or orthodontist should be conducted to determine if using a space maintainer is needed

Why Children’s Dentistry Is Important

Our children’s dentistry services can help with a range of dental issues:

  • Cavities and tooth decay are common in children and are best treated by a dentist.
  • Tooth sensitivity can cause discomfort and pain in children.
  • Dental emergencies should be seen and treated quickly by an experienced dental professional.
  • Paediatric gingivitis and gum disease should be treated early on to prevent long-term damage to the gums and teeth.
  • Orthodontics is a common requirement in children to help treat misalignments, underbites, overbites, etc.
  • Thumb sucking can cause a variety of problems with the mouth and teeth.
  • When baby teeth are lost prematurely, space maintainers can be fitted to ensure that there is enough room for permanent teeth to grow.
