Root Canal Treatment
When you have an infection in the root of your tooth experiencing dental pain that has gone from bad to worse quickly, we will likely recommend a root canal treatment. The treatment is a standard procedure that can save an infected tooth and alleviate the pain of a toothache.
The procedure involves creating access to the interior of your tooth so we can remove the infected nerve tissue and pulp. Although the procedure is often associated with pain, it is usually the pain of toothache that people are thinking about.
The root canal procedure is not painful since we will completely anesthetize the area before starting treatment. Once we remove the infected tissue, your pain will be significantly diminished. The area might be tender for a few days after the root canal, but overall, you will feel much better.
What Are the Signs That Root Canal Therapy Is Needed?
Some of the signs that you might need a root canal include:
- A toothache that goes from bad to unbearable in a relatively short amount of time. Often the tooth hurts more when you lie down.
- A white spot on your gums near the affected tooth.
- Swollen gums near the affected tooth.
- A tooth that might be overly sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids.
Will You Need a Dental Crown After Root Canal Therapy?
We generally recommend that you get a dental crown after a root canal to strengthen the remaining tooth structure. Removing the living tissue from the tooth root results in a tooth that is brittle and prone to breakage. A dental crown will protect your tooth and ensure you can chew on it again comfortably.

- Gum recession causes the teeth to start to look longer
As gum disease worsens, which it usually will without treatment, teeth might become loose. Finally, teeth might be lost as the disease progresses.
Gum disease treatment might be applied if it is discovered in its earliest stages. Later, however, management of the condition is the best you can usually hope for. Gum disease sufferers are often on a maintenance schedule of professional cleanings every few months.
