Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth that are stuck under the gum or bone can cause pain, infection and damage to nearby teeth.
What is impacted wisdom teeth?
An impacted wisdom tooth does not have room to come through fully. It may be tilted, partly through the gum, or completely trapped in the bone.
Common causes
- Not enough room in the jaw
- Tooth growing at an angle
- Thick bone or gum over the tooth
Symptoms
- Pain at the back of the jaw
- Swollen, tender gum
- Bad taste or breath
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Sometimes no symptoms
How we treat it
An OPG X-ray shows the tooth's position. Some impacted teeth can be monitored; others are best removed. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.
