Tooth Abscess
An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum. It needs prompt treatment.
What is tooth abscess?
An abscess forms when bacteria infect the nerve inside a tooth or the gum beside it. The infection can spread to the jaw and surrounding tissues if not treated.
Common causes
- Untreated deep decay
- A cracked tooth
- Previous trauma to the tooth
- Advanced gum disease
Symptoms
- Severe throbbing pain
- Swelling of the face or gum
- A pimple on the gum
- Fever
- Bad taste from draining pus
How we treat it
The infection is drained and its source treated, usually with root canal treatment or removal of the tooth. Antibiotics may be needed if the infection is spreading.
