What is root canal infection?

When bacteria reach the pulp inside a tooth, it becomes inflamed and infected. Sometimes a tooth that had root canal treatment years ago becomes reinfected.

Common causes

  • Deep decay
  • Cracks
  • Trauma
  • Leaking old fillings or crowns

Symptoms

  • Lingering sensitivity
  • Throbbing pain
  • Pain when biting
  • Swelling or a gum pimple
  • Darkened tooth

How we treat it

Root canal treatment removes the infection and seals the tooth. A previously treated tooth may need retreatment or specialist care.

Yes, occasionally. Retreatment is often possible.

Do I need antibiotics?
